Armenia files lawsuit with UN court, accuses Baku of racial discrimination against Armenians

NEW YORK, UN. Sept 17 (Interfax) - Armenia has filed a lawsuit with the UN International Court of Justice, accusing Azerbaijan of racial discrimination against Armenians and asking the court to hold Baku to account for that, according to the court's press release circulated on Thursday.

In particular, according to the lawsuit, the Armenian side believes that Azerbaijan has violated the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1965. The lawsuit said that "for decades, Azerbaijan has subjected Armenians to racial discrimination" and that, "as a result of this [Azerbaijani] state-sponsored policy of Armenian hatred, Armenians have been subjected to systemic discrimination, mass killings, torture and other abuse".

Armenia also asserts that in September 2020, Azerbaijan once again breached the aforementioned convention during the armed conflict between the two countries.

"Even after the end of hostilities, following a ceasefire which entered into effect on 10 November 2020, Azerbaijan has continued to engage in the murder, torture and other abuse of Armenian prisoners of war," it said.

"Armenia therefore requests the court to hold Azerbaijan responsible for its violations of the convention, to prevent future harm, and to redress the harm that has already been caused," the lawsuit said.

According to Armenia, these violations were directed at individuals of Armenian ethnic or national origin regardless of their actual nationality.
