Marcelo Ebrard says the investigation in Cienfuegos case is not completed

Mexico City.- Faced with the surprise announced that it was unveiled yesterday about the exoneration of General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, who was accused by the DEA of money laundering and drug trafficking, the holder of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, stated that the military case has not yet been completely closed, because elements remain to be studied, although he completely ruled out that Cienfuegos can be tried.

During the morning conference of Palacio Nacional the Chancellor of Mexico and to which the documents published a few hours ago on the Twitter of the SRE was addressed where the DEA provided all the evidence that allegedly instilled the former puppeteer of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) in the six-year history of former President Enrique Peña Nieto, stated that the United States judicial authorities had submitted copies of messages as part of the evidence they possessed against the former officer.

However, after months of analysis, the Public Prosecutor's Officeof the Republic (FGR) had taken the decision not to accuse Cienfuegos Zepeda in any way on the ground that the evidence presented was not sufficient to hold it accountable for the acts alleged against it. The official asserted that, in accordance with the provisions of the current Law, the information available to the DEA is devoid of criminal proceedings against the 72-year-old man, even stressed, they are insufficient to even stop him.

In his speech, Ebrard Casaubón clarified that while there are no elements to accuse the general, there areothers involved, as indicated by the FGR itself, since there are components that have yet to be thoroughly investigated, but, however, completely detached from the sedena ex-owner.

This was backed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador who assured that the FGR would continue with the corresponding indeeds following the lead of the data provided by the DEA. In this regard, the federal representative emphasized that "the record will be opened so that, if there are elements and evidence, the true perpetrators are punished."

In this same tenor, Given the statement made by Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard when General Cienfuegos was returned to Mexico in relation to the that if the military was not investigated it would practically mean a suicide for the nation, both in terms of security and diplomacy, the SRE holder stressed that there was no such suicide in exonerating Cienfuegos, since, he emphasized that there is no need for the process to end in conviction to ensure that the investigation was carried out.
