The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is a parliamentary republic with its capital in Port of Spain. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 and adopted its current constitution in 1976. The executive branch is led by the president, who serves as chief of state, and the prime minister, serving as head of government. The president is indirectly elected by an electoral college of selected Senate and House of Representatives members. The president generally appoints the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives as prime minister. The Country's bicameral Parliament consists of the 31-seat Senate and the 42-seat House of Representatives. Senators are appointed by the ruling part, the president, and the opposition party, and Representatives are directly elected.
