City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin was incorporated in 1958 and is located in Dane County, immediately northeast of the City of Madison. The boundaries of Sun Prairie encompass an area approximately 12 square miles with an estimated population of approximately 31,810. It has historically been one of the fastest growing cities in Wisconsin. The City provides services for its citizens including public safety (police, fire, emergency medical services and building inspection), streets, water, electric, wastewater, recreational programming and general administration. The City operates its own electric utility and contracts with a non-profit company for fire protection services. The citizens of Sun Prairie enjoy the 425 acres of Parks and 34.7 miles of trails within the City including Sheehan Park which is the City's 147 acre community park. This park includes a skateboard park, shelters, volleyball courts, softball fields, youth baseball complex, basketball courts, soccer field, playgrounds and a forested trail system. Some of the City's more unique services include an aquatic center, a Historical Library and Museum, as well as a 36,000 square foot library that serves the City as well as the surrounding area. The City operates under a Mayor-Council form of government. The Mayor is elected at large for two years and eight council members representing four districts are elected for staggered two-year terms. They mayor and council are elected on a non-partisan basis. The City Council appoints the City Administrator who has the responsibility for carrying out the Council policies and administering City operations.
